My daughter has had trouble eating since the first time she ever tried. Breast-feeding was a struggle from the get-go and she even started choking and turned blue a few times in her first couple of weeks after she was born. As the weeks passed, we still struggled with her feeding and although she was slowly gaining weight, nursing her took over an hour each time and I never got a break. On top of those struggles, she was screaming night and day and nothing would comfort her.
To make a long story short, it turned out she was allergic to a protein most often found in milk products but also in things like cereal and pasta as well, so much of what I was eating was passing on to her and making her sick. So she was put on a hypoallergenic, prescription formula and she has since improved with leaps and bounds. So now, Abby is almost 11 months old (seriously?) and we have been trying to introduce “solids” to her for a couple of months now. We’ve been through the “1st Foods” of single ingredients like sweet potatos, pears, peas, apples and more. She LOVED them once she got the hang of the spoon. She would eat an entire container at one sitting. More recently we’ve moved on to the “2nd Foods” and even some finger food – the easily dissolving cereal type.
In general, about 90% of the baby food we buy is Gerber. They have a long standing reputation and honestly dominate the market in that area. We like the quality, the price and more recently I have really been excited about their organic products and those with added DHA. I try whenever possible to serve organics to my family because I believe that the more natural a product is, the better it is for our bodies. And DHA, which is naturally found in breast-milk has been shown to support brain and eye development, so a baby food with that added is something I am interested in feeding to Abby.
Gerber sent us a wonderful gift crate filled with the following:
- A box of Gerber Organic Brown Rice Cereal
- (1) 2-pack of Gerber 2nd Foods Purees with DHA – Harvest Vegetables with Mixed Grains
- (1) 2-pack of Gerber 2nd Foods Purees with DHA – Spring Vegetables with Brown Rice
- (1) jar of Gerber Organic 2nd Foods Dinners – Chicken with Country Vegetables & Rice
- (1) jar of Gerber 2nd Foods Dinners with DHA – Garden Vegetables with Whole Wheat Pasta
- (1) jar of Gerber 2nd Foods Dinners with DHA – Macaroni & Cheese with Vegetables
- (1) jar of Gerber 2nd Foods Dinners with DHA – Vegetable Risotto with Cheese
There was also a little 6 piece vegetable puzzle in the crate that Jake seems to adore even though the kid can do 100 piece puzzles in his sleep.
Here is a slide show of what we received:
And here is a shot of Abby enjoying the Gerber 2nd Foods Dinners with DHA – Garden Vegetables with Whole Wheat Pasta.
As you can see, as usual, she wore a lot of it while she was eating it. Right now, she actually prefers the finger foods over the baby food, although she did appear to enjoy the flavor of the Garden Vegetables. I think she likes to put the food in her mouth herself and she’s not quite ready to handle the spoon herself. I smelled (of course) the food and tried a little bit of it and it wasn’t half bad. I look forward to trying all the other flavors with Abby and taking more pictures of her in technicolor!
