The Travel Adventures of Lilly P. Badilly: Costa Rica is written and illustrated by Debbie Glade and published by Smart Poodle Publishing. It is a musical and literary journey that takes you along with a family of millipedes on a trip to the rainforests of Costa Rica.
We were sent a hardcover copy of the book and its accompanying CD by the author and it has quickly become a family favorite.
From the website:
Lilly P. Badilly is a little millipede with a brilliant mind and an exceptional talent for playing the piano. She lives in a teeny, tiny hole in the wall in the Miami International Airport with her grandparents, Nellie O. Badilly and Willie Z. Badilly. Together they embark on a most unique, and sometimes hilarious, travel adventure deep into the fertile rain forest of Costa Rica. It is there that Lilly is forced to face her biggest fears in order to save the lives of her family, herself and her new friends. Along the way, Lilly learns a lot about geography, culture and the plants and animals of Costa Rica. Best of all she discovers that if she uses her brain, she can work through her fears and turn a frightening situation into a celebration! Included with this book is a most entertaining audio CD. The characters of Lilly P. Badilly come to life with voices that children of all ages and adults will enjoy. Complete with music and authentic Costa Rican sound effects, readers can listen, read and sing along at the same time.
Our take on the book:
Normally, I don’t like millipedes.
Actually, I despise them.
But there is something endearing about a blue and green colored millipede with a farting grandfather and a wig wearing grandmother!
From first glance, the book is downright adorable with it’s vibrant illustrations adorning every page. My son picked it up and began looking at it right away. I was a little concerned that although at 4 he can read very well (even read part of our mortgage contract out loud and astounded our realtor) that he would get bored with all the words. Just because he can read, he’s still a 4 year old boy distracted by everything.
My concerns disappeared after we put the CD in. Who can resisting a SINGING millipede with a farting grandfather and a wig wearing grandmother, especially when she sings about those people and plays the piano. The CD is essentially a narrated version (by the author and her family) of the book, but it is more than that. There is music, sound effects and different voices for the different characters that makes the book jump right to life. Jake was hooked!
Here is a picture of him starting to read before the CD started:
Then he really starts to get intense as he realizes the CD is reading the book:
And as Lilly starts singing, he gets this “ok, wait…what is this, I like this” look and looks back at the front of the book for a second
The Travel Adventures of Lilly P. Badilly: Costa Rica chronicles the journey of a family of millipedes from their home in Miami International Airport to Costa Rica. Their journey is exciting, interesting and full of colorful images and colorful characters. It is very easy for kids and adults alike to get drawn into both the pictures in the book and the vividness of the CD and we’ve even found ourselves just listening to the CD while doing other things around the house. I can easily see the book and CD relating to kids of all ages. Also, it not only tells a story but it provides a glimpse into the geography, culture and animals of another country. And it does it through music, creative storytelling, unique characters and very often, humor.
When I asked my son what he liked about Lilly P. Badilly, he said “let me show you” and took the book and began leafing through it. He then looked up at me and said, “I liked everything about the book and the CD.” Can’t get much better than that!
My favorite illustration in the book is an image of Lilly and her family stowed away in a briefcase on their journey to Costa Rica, it makes me chuckle every time I see it!
Actually, I adore it!
