I am naturally drawn to dogs. I always have been, I think, but the older I get the more I value the simplicity of what makes a dog a dog.
Dogs are super loyal. All you need to do is feed them and give them a place to sleep and in most cases you have a friend and protector for life. Dogs don’t ask for much in return. Dogs are amazing listeners, especially if you happen to be scratching behind their ears. A dog can make you feel like the most important person in the world. And they really do enjoy the simple pleasures in life, which is something us humans can take a lesson from.
Our dogs really define what it means to enjoy the simple pleasures in life with 2 main activities.
Simple pleasure #1: play time!
Whether it is a game of fetch, chase, or a wrestling match, the joy they experience in those moments is amazing to watch.
Simon’s favorite play activity was fetch. We used to joke that he manufactured tennis balls in his sleep because even if we couldn’t find one, he would manage to run through the house and appear with one in his mouth. If you threw that ball for him, he was your best friend. Not food. Not ear scratching. Not walks. Nothing could distract him from his beloved tennis ball. We had to say goodbye to Simon on October 11th of this year, but the memories of the simple pleasure he took in chases after a small green ball will live forever in our hearts.
Our other two, their favorite play activity is a game of chase with a bit of wrestling in between.
They have a great time running laps and tackling each other.
Simple pleasure #2: nap time!
You can always count on a dog to fall asleep just about anywhere and everywhere at random times throughout the day. When Simon was with us, the top of the stairs was his favorite spot, and as the leader of the pack, his minions followed suit.
Now that he is gone, Toby and Sadie find more comfortable places to nap, and I swear they have a mission to try and sleep in every spot possible in our house, which is fine but I have to draw the line at tables and counters, although I did find Sadie on my coffee table once.
These things that my dogs enjoy, these simple pleasures, they are things humans often take for granted. I think that’s why I find so much joy in watching them do these things. I wish I had the ability to just set everything else aside and live in the moment and enjoy it 100%. I may not chase a ball or take part in a wrestling match, but the things I do enjoy I would love to learn to enjoy in the same way they do. I’d also love to nap 75% of the day!
But since I can’t always enjoy life in the same way they do, I love watching them do it. Their joy helps alleviate stress for me and just knowing they do think I am the most important person in the world makes the hard parts of life easier to handle. They really are members of our family and a big part of our hearts!
As I mentioned, we said goodbye to Simon recently. He was almost 13 and lived a very happy life in those 13 years. He had numerous medical problems but his overall healthy was good and we credit that, in large part, to a healthy diet. We know it’s important that we feed our families healthy food, and our furry family members are no exception.
We want our dogs to be around for a long, long time to continue to enjoy these simple pleasures!
