Jake is ultra-thrilled with his back-to-school shoes this year because they are red and black, the colors of his football team.

I remember shopping for back-to-school shoes. I liked penny loafers (yes, I’m THAT old) but I also liked those black and white saddle shoes I think they called them. I had a pair once. I think. Unless I dreamed it.

Anyhow, shopping for school shoes can be a life long memory, but with my son, it really was an exercise in futility.

He tried on 14 pairs and complained about every last one.

I gave up.

Then we learned about Keen Kids shoes.

Keen has such a great variety of shoes for the whole family and for just about every situation. They are stylish and unique and very durable.

About Keen:

We all live many lives splitting our time between work, play and giving back.

At KEEN we call this living a HybridLife. HybridLife is the KEEN mantra, our commitment to create solutions in our product and business practices, to design footwear, bags and socks that enable you to play anyplace without a ceiling; and our promise to care for each other and the world around us. We invite you to join us in tossing on a pair of KEEN shoes, socks or a bag and to diving head first into living a HybridLife.

I had a pair of Keen sandals many years ago that I loved. They lasted a long time and were comfortable, protected my feet well and looked great too. I know this was a brand that could stand up to what my 8 year old football player can do to shoes, especially because of Keen’s signature toe protection.

We selected the following style:

Black/Jester Red – $65.00

Ready for romping through streams and puddles, and equally capable of tackling mountain trails or playground jungle gyms, the Alamosa WP is a lightweight waterproof trail shoe that’s ready for anything. A waterproof breathable membrane keeps little feet dry in wet or muddy conditions, and our secure fit lace capture system ensures the Alamosa stays put during energetic play or exploration.

These shoes are perfect for Jake’s lifestyle. He is very active from the moment he gets up. He likes to wear shoes that let him look stylish yet play football at recess. He needs easy on and off because I don’t allow shoes in my house, and laces tend to come undone when he is running around. Waterproof is important too, considering he’s certainly not immune to playing in the rain and running through puddles. As an added bonus, he can wear these with khaki pants and a dress shirt and look dressed up. It’s a versatile shoe that will look great and stand up to just about anything.

Fit-wise, he said they fit great and hasn’t complained once.

I was a bit concerned about how they would look with shorts, but he and I were both happy with the way they look, and they compliment his new backpack.

Check out the Alamosa WP from Keen and a selection of other great shoes for back-to-school or for yourself on the Keen Footwear website. You can purchase directly from Keen or other places on the web such as

My son has a pair of the Keen Clayton Hiking Boots and they are incredible! The boots are quality built to withstand the continuous beating of hard playtime! I LOVE Keen products!

I like the way they lace, my son has a pair of Teva’s in a similar style and they have worked out really well. I don’t have to worry about them coming untied and him tripping over laces becaue he doesn’t wan to stop playing long enough to tie his shoes.

My son has a habit of getting his shoelaces knotted too. I have no idea HOW he does it, but then I have to site there and try and get it out after he spend 20 minutes tightening it even worse. These kinds of laces are definitely a better choice for an active boy.

That is so cool! I had gray suede penny loafers when I was in grammar school. I went to private school so you could not wear gym shoes. Besides when I was a kid the only gym shoes you could get were the Keds type. They did not have all the ones like they do today.
