We have allergies in our house. Strange, crazy, major allergies, to the point that my son has an Epi-Pen because he had a reaction where his neck swelled up once (we’re not sure why). He has been tested and has allergies to dust mites, pollen, mold, and so many more. We try to do things around the house to keep him as comfortable as possible, like vacuuming more often, washing his sheets more frequently and adding a mattress and pillow cover to provide a barrier between him and the allergens.
Now, thanks to Oreck, there is another way to help keep his allergies at bay in the house. The Oreck Halo UV-C Vacuum Cleaner is the world’s first and only UV-C germ killing upright vacuum. Just by vacuuming your carpets with the Oreck Halo, you can reduce up to 99.9% of bacteria and up to 90% of dust mite eggs.
Some of the bacteria the Oreck Halo reduces are:
- Flu Virus
- Polio Virus
Powerful 2-in-1 cleaning performance.

Incredible suction vacuums dirt and debris, while the patented Oreck Halo light chamber kills microscopic germs, bacteria, viruses, mold, dust mite eggs, and flea eggs using UV-C light. I was extremely excited to be able to try out the Oreck Halo. It was easy to put together, simply attach the handle, tighten the screw and place the attachments on the body of the vacuum. The HEPA filter bag was already installed so I was ready to vacuum within minutes of opening the box.
The Oreck Halo is NOT the light Oreck vacuum that a lot of people mistake it for. It weighs 17 lbs and is fairly heavy. It is not self-propelled so it does take some effort to push it around. I’ve found I vacuum a lot more slowly with the Oreck Halo than with my old vacuum. The Halo is definitely not for the weak. It is not easily manueverable as well, requiring a lot of room to make turns and switch positions.
For me, the weight of the vacuum, while distinct, is not that much of a problem. In order to take advantage of the germ killings features on the Oreck Halo, vacuuming slower seems like it would provide more contact with the UV light, therefore getting more germ killing power with each stroke.
The Oreck Halo is incredibly powerful. The suction power is impressive and I’ll be honest, I love the streaks it leaves in my carpet making it look brand new. I can hear dirt and debris being sucked up and working its way through the vacuum to settle inside the bag, and it does a great job with the dog hair. I have found that I filled a bag up in less than a month, we have a 95 lb golden retriever with long hair, and I vacuum frequently. While I would prefer a bagless vacuum to save the expense of buying bags, it wouldn’t be smart to kill germs and bacteria with the vacuum, suck up dirt and debris and risk putting some of that back into the air. The Oreck Halo has self-sealing bags to make disposal clean and easy.
While I don’t believe the Oreck Halo would appeal to everyone, I do believe for families with allergies or just those who want to provided cleaner surfaces for their kids, the Oreck Halo is a great tool to ensuring cleaner carpets. Personally, the benefits outweigh the few things that I would consider cons with this vacuum. Features like a switch to change from carpets to hard surfaces on the fly, a safety for the UV feature (if the vacuum head raises up it turns off, and also you have to hold down a button to activate it, and keep holding – if you let go, it turns off), the 13′ detachable hose, the 29′ foot long cord and the 3 free annual tune-ups definitely add to its appeal and value.
I like my old vacuum for it’s maneuverability and lightness, but for peace-of-mind that I am getting my carpet as clean and free from germs and allergens as I can, the Oreck Halo has quickly become my favorite vacuum.
You can purchase the Oreck Halo direct from Oreck on their website, or use their store locator tool to find a store near you that sells them.
