We love Chinese food around here, but we certainly don’t get an opportunity to eat it often enough. Most days of the week we end up cooking less time-intensive foods especially the kind where all you have to do is add hamburger, heat up a vegetable, and serve and you have a decent, tasty family meal. We do it for convenience, affordability and taste. We like them.
La Choy has entered into the “just add meat” arena with their new La Choy Creations boxed meals. They have three flavors to choose from, Asian Fried Rice, Teriyaki Chicken and Sweet & Sour Chicken. I was sent a box of the Sweet & Sour Chicken flavor to try; sweet & sour is one of my favorite Chinese flavors…along with all of the others…
La Choy Creations Sweet & Sour Chicken brings together rice, red pepper, and chunks of sweet pineapple in a specially seasoned sauce. Simmer with chicken for an easy way to make a restaurant-quality meal at home.
Inside the box, was a can of sauce, a bag of rice, and I just had to add chicken. Since I was the one cooking, and I didn’t thaw out any chicken and the kids were complaining of being hungry and threatened bodily harm if I didn’t hurry up, I opted for the canned chicken I happened to have in the cabinet. The prep time was just a few minutes, the cook time was fairly quick as well, and within 1/2 hour I had dinner on the table. I served it with peas, well, because it seemed more Chinese than green beans or carrots and I always like to have a veggie.
Both of my kids enjoyed the La Choy Creations. In fact, Jake even asked me to save the leftovers for lunch the next day. I thought it was good but personally would have liked a little more kick to the sauce. Overall, though, it was pretty tasty and the perfect fit for me, not only the ease of making it but the nutrition information as well. I am currently on the Weight Watchers diet plan and I calculated a cup of this to be only 7 points (that’s a cup on my plate) and combined with the peas I was quite full afterwards.
If you would like to try one of the La Choy Creations flavors for yourself, they currently have a link to a $1 off coupon that you can print on their website.
