I know you’ve seen them, those perfectly adorable Bento lunch boxes made by some apparently superhuman moms. Cheese and veggies cut into fun shapes. Sandwiches and rice balls formed into animals complete with eyes and ears. Perfectly shaped adorable lunches that for most of us result in a “Pinterest FAIL” because try as we might, our attempts at Bento end up looking like someone took the container and shook it a few hundred times.
It’s easy to give up and resort back to a sandwich and chips when that happens, but you don’t have to.
You want your kids to have a healthy, yet fun lunch that they will be excited to eat, but it shouldn’t require a cabinet full of fancy gadgets and a degree in graphic design to accomplish it.
A healthy Bento lunch can be achieved with very few tools and very little skill.
Because of my daughter’s food allergies and our focus on healthy eating, it’s often a challenge for us to eat on the go, so for us lunches can really be for any meal. My kids actually call these “fun lunches” because they really do enjoy smaller portions of a wide variety of food versus a typical sandwich, chips and apple type lunch. For this particular “lunch” we actually packed these for dinner during our karate lesson because we were going to be there all afternoon.
What you need:
- Shallow container with a tight fitting lid. I prefer stainless steel, but BPA-free plastic works great too.
- Small glass ramekins or silicone cupcake liners.
- Your favorite fruits, veggies, cheeses, etc.
- A knife for cutting everything into bite-sized pieces.
- A sweet treat.
- A healthy drink.
Assemble! It doesn’t have to be perfect or fancy, it just has to be fun!
One of the key elements of any healthy lunch is the drink. Water is my obviously first choice, but let’s be realistic – my kids are eating lunches filled with healthy fruits and vegetables, the least I can do is offer them some variety in their beverage. Thankfully with Vita Coco Kids, I don’t have to compromise their health for great flavor and variety. They are easy to take on-the-go too!
Vita Coco Kids is naturally fruit flavored coconut water. It has about 1/2 the sugar of other kids’ juices, includes electrolytes to keep kids hydrated, and has nothing artificial in it! Simple ingredients, nutrients like potassium, calcium and vitamin C made Vita Coco Kids a hit with me and great flavor made Vita Coco Kids a hit with my kids.
But Vito Coco Kids aren’t just for kids. I have been enjoying one with my lunch as well and it’s nice and refreshing especially after a karate workout.
Vita Coco Kids were also handpicked by Target for the “Made to Matter” program, and they have their own Pandora Radio Station, “Vita Coco Kids Family Hits” for family-friendly radio at home or on the go.
Vita Coco Kids come in 3 great flavors: Paradise Punch, Very Cherry Beach, and Apple Island. They are gluten-free, and can be purchased at major supermarkets, specialty stores, club stores and online. For more information about Vita Coco Kids, check out their social media channels:
