I remember a couple of years ago when I started advocating for organic food. A lot of people were somewhat annoyed by my public stance on the importance of a healthy food system. I’m not exactly sure why so many people pushed back, but I do know that we have come a long way in just a few short years towards increasing awareness of the potential dangers in our mainstream food supply. Many of those who pushed back have actually embraced organics and completely changed the way they eat.
This is such a pivotal and exciting time for our food supply!
There is a lot of work to be done, but awareness is growing. People are asking the right questions. People are making better choices. Brands who have been on the forefront of the organic food movement are engaging with consumers to not only educate but to connect in a way like never before.
Clif Bar & Company has been a brand that we have supported for a long time. They have a passion, like I do, for trying to be a catalyst for change for our food supply and they believe that using organic ingredients is the best way to initiate that change.
Clif Bar & Company believes that how we craft our food matters so they launched a new series called Farmers Speak that provides an opportunity to experience the stories of organic ingredients and the farmers who grow them.
Organic oats are a primary ingredient in many of Clif Bar & Company’s products, including CLIF® Bar, LUNA®, CLIF Builder’s®, CLIF Kid Zbar™ and CLIF CRUNCH® and so the first feature in the Farmers Speak series is about organic oats.
Farmers Speak: Giving Voice to Organic Oats
A spotlight on farmer Brian Krumm and organic oats
I got chills watching this video, especially when Brian says “I wanted not to handle chemicals around my children…”. His children were the driving force behind his switch from conventional farming to organic. I was really moved by how much his farm is a family business and how his grandchildren get to experience the land he himself was raised on.
I also love his definition of the difference between organic and conventional farming.
And when he talks about his dad and their neighbors – a first generation of chemical farmers who all passed away from pancreatic cancer and other similar ailments, that really makes you think long and hard about ingesting food drenched in pesticides.
What an inspiring story. I am so thankful that CLIF® Bar provided us all the opportunity to take a sneak peak into the lives of one of the farmers that supplies the organic oats for their products.
Because your food should have a story behind it. A story with a person who cares about their impact on our health and our planet.
