Competition is fun, but often playing together, or “co-play” can help create a much more rewarding experience.

“Co-play” involves working together towards a common goal rather than competition. In my house, “co-play” is most often found in building blocks, puzzles and certain platform video games where the characters work together to defeat the levels.  Those are some of the best times we have as a family.  It’s almost like a team-building exercise and I think we really have more fun working together than we do when there is competition involved.

No one loses and we all win.

We learn a lot about each other this way.  How to support each other.  What each other’s strengths and weaknesses are.  Are I think it makes us a stronger family because of it.

I really think that this type of “play” is important not just for families but for kids in general with each other.  Sure, learning to be a humble winner and a gracious loser is important in games involving competition but I also think it’s important that they learn to do things together towards a common goal.

Webkinz from Ganz are stuffed pets that are web-enabled to interact with an online world called Webkinz World.  Webkinz World is FREE to use and is a place where kids can adopt pets, decorate rooms, go on quests, play games, take quizzes and even chat with other members (in a controlled environment).

Webkinz World has been active since 2007 and since then, many of its original users have grown up with the game.  In order to help expand the family-friendly aspect of the game and provide a way for teens who grew up with it to continue to experience it, Ganz has introduced Webkinz Friends on Facebook. Some quotes from the President and Creator of Webkinz, Howard Ganz:

  • “It’s the new face of co-play, where everyone can have fun in their own age-appropriate environments.”
  • “Webkinz World is a family-friendly brand, and we want fans to enjoy our online world on the platforms they have embraced”

Additional information about Webkinz Friends and how it relates to Webkinz World:

  • Webkinz Friends on Facebook allows users to earn and send prizes to any Webkinz World account (co-play).
  • Webkinz is also launching a tablet version that will interact cross-platform in the same way Webkinz Friends does on Facebook.  This tablet version is for kids and adults and allows you to earn prizes for your Webkinz World accounts.
  • Webkinz Plush can be adopted within the game using a secret code.

I have to admit, the game sounds pretty fun.  We haven’t used Webkinz World before, but I definitely think my kids and I will be playing on our respective, age-friendly platforms. Take a look at a screenshot: To help celebrate the launch of Webkinz Friends, Webkinz has a new line of plush called the Webkinz Rockerz pet and I get to give one away!
