Recently, upon a recommendation from my mom (because you know she is always right, as much as it drives me crazy), I purchased a Himalayan Salt Lamp. She had gotten one and had told me about the benefits of Himalayan salt lamps, and I figured even if it doesn’t do what it says it does, it looks cool so I really had nothing to lose.
So I bought one.
What is a Himalayan Salt Lamp?
In short, a Himalayan salt lamp is a hollowed out chunk of pink Himalayan salt with a light bulb inside. Most Himalayan salt lamps are simply big chunks of pink salt, each one unique and different because they are all natural and not manufactured. There are some more decorative varieties where smaller chunks are collected together and placed in a metal basket, and there are some that have been shaped to be a more distinct decorative shape.
If you are purchasing a Himalayan salt lamp, make sure you get one make of pure Himalayan crystal and not some other type of salt, because an imitation will not have the same benefits.
What are the benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps?
Himalayan salt lamps offer the following benefits thanks to their inherent emission of positive ions when heated:
- Purify the air
- Remove odors in the air
- Reduce stress
- Eliminate allergens in the air
- Improve sleep quality
- Improve mood
- Reduce stuffy noses
- Improve breathing
- Reduce feelings of sluggishness
How do Himalayan Salt Lamps work (ie: what are negative ions and why are they important)?
An ion is a charged atom or molecule. It is charged because the number of electrons do not equal the number of protons in the atom or molecule. An atom can acquire a positive charge or a negative charge depending on whether the number of electrons in an atom is greater or less then the number of protons in the atom.
When an atom is attracted to another atom because it has an unequal number of electrons and protons, the atom is called an ION. If the atom has more electrons than protons, it is a negative ion, or ANION. If it has more protons than electrons,it is a positive ion.1
So there are two kinds of ions, positive and negative, and despite the way it sounds, positive ions actually have a negative affect on the human body. Positive ions are produced by electronic devices (how many of these do you have around your home?) and things like allergens, mold, bacteria and other undesirable airborne things also contain a positive charge. These positive ions run rampant in your home and can cause many of the things that Himalayan Salt Lamps counteract – odors, stress, allergies, poor sleep, bad moods (including seasonal depression), sinus issues, poor breathing and more.
Positive ions can affect your immune system but especially your lungs and respiratory system. And it’s even worse now-a-days because of the large number of electronic things in our homes and offices. These electronics include pretty much anything you plug in and run such as televisions, hair dryers, vacuums and computers but also includes air-conditioning, clothes dryers and fluorescent lights.
Negative ions are attracted to positive ions and basically act to neutralize them and thereby eliminate the effects of the positive ions. The best way to describe how negative ions can make you feel is to imagine yourself walking on a beautiful beach hearing the waves splashing on the sand and smelling the fresh sea air. You just feel better.
The benefits of Himalayan salt lamps are the next best thing to a peaceful walk on the beach!
As I mentioned, I wasn’t really optimistic that the lamp doing much more than looking kinda cool, but I approached it with an open mind. I bought a small one and left it on 24/7 in the living room for a week or so and honestly I forgot about the lamp. I have four dogs and our home had a distinct “doggy” smell plus I have been experiencing some seasonal allergies lately. And you know what? Both seem to have subsided! We have since gotten a second Himalayan salt lamp for our bedroom.
