When it comes to back-to-school shopping, there are three categories of things you will buy besides school supplies.
- Stuff they need.
- Stuff they want.
Sometimes things fall into both categories, but often as parents we have to try and balance the two to make everyone happy. I find it helps to make a checklist to use as we shop. We don’t always get everything on the “want” list, but it helps prioritize and makes sure we don’t miss something they need.

Another way to keep track of wants vs needs for back-to-school is with eBay collections. Each collection you create is a custom list of items you select to make sure they have the back-to-school that makes them happy, and doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg. My kids are entering sixth grade and first grade this year, and they are not at a loss for things they want. My son’s main want is a cell phone, but he has plenty of other things he hopes to get for back to school. My daughter wants a desk for her room, she really is looking forward to being a first grader. Of course, she still wants some fun girly clothes and jewelry. So I created an eBay collection for both of them filled with the things they want.
For every collection you create using #BackToSchool in the title, you will be entered to win a $500 to use on eBay.com. Creating a collection is easy, you simple shop on eBay for great back-to-school items and then save your favorites to a collection using #BackToSchool in the title. That’s it, you are then entered to win!
